CFP Board recently announced updates to its continuing education (“CE”) policies that will take effect January 1, 2010. The updated policies include changes to the procedures for registering CE Sponsors and Programs with CFP Board. To provide CE Sponsors with full details about the 2010 CE policies, and to address questions in an open and structured manner, CFP Board hosted this free Webinar on Friday, October 23, 2009. During this event, Vanessa Williamson, CAE, CFP Boards continuing education manager, provided an overview of CFP Board’s 2010 CE policies (www.CFP.net/teamup/2010_CE_Policies.asp) and review the implementation schedule for the updated policies. Vanessa also detailed the anticipated benefits the updated policies will provide to CE Sponsors and CFP(R) certificants, and she addressed audience questions. Question by Oliver: In 2009 tax rules, If I did not take RMD from my IRA and 401k in 2009, do I have to take twice in 2010?
In 2009 I did not have to take my normal Required Minimum Distribution from my IRA or 401k. I did neither. In 2010 do I have to make up for that by taking twice the normal distribution from both accounts?

In 2009 there is a special waiver so that you do not need to take your RMD from your IRA or 401(k). You do not need to make up this RMD in subsequent years. Unless the waiver is extended, you simply begin taking your RMD as usual for the 2010 tax year.
