I am 19 years old and i am trying to figure out my career. I have a big interest in getting into Real Estate investing. But I don’t know how to get into it. Everybody tells me to find a mentor, but they are either so expensive or there’s the decision if its worth the money or people tell me you have to be rich to start. There has to be a way around that. What does it take? Whats the best way? How do you start out? What are the steps?

Todd, Newman Asset Management: ” Your thought process is correct on many fronts…so do not get discouraged. I would agree with many that getting a mentor is a key step if you are looking to start quickly and not make a ton of mistakes. That said, you do not have to go out and pay dome ‘guru’ thousands of dollars when you are starting out. I would suggest the following:

  1. Start asking around to business people you, your parents , or your friends may know. There are many successful, everyday real estate investors who are not out onĀ  speaking circuit or infomercial.
  2. Join some networking groups in your area – you will be surprised how many people in network groups know a successful real estate person.
  3. Learn, learn , learn…there is tons of good info online, at the library, and offered by state real estate groups…most for free.
  4. After educating your self some, present a plan of attack to some of the investor contacts you make by doing steps 1 & 2. An investor is more likely to help you out when they see that you are serious and willing to do some work yourself.
  5. Stay positive…there are great opportunities out there…keep plugging and you will find some.
